2013 Victoria High Point Series - Race 2 - March 9th. - River Walk Venue.
Races were called off after 6 heats. The wind dropped from almost nothing to zero (that's frustrating with a sailboat, for sure!).  Dave Ogden was the only Feet B skipper to sail.  Richard won the day, beating Chris by two (2) points.

2013 Victoria High Point Series - Race 3 - May 4th. - Riverlakes

The winds were great today, probably between 5 and 8 mph with gusts to 10 or 12 mph. Richard won all but one of the twelve heats. Ron Berg won one. Dave was sailing Casey Ogden's Victoria. Dave placed 2nd (twice) in the first 6 heats, but the sail servo caused a breakdown, preventing further competiton. It was good race day with lots of action and close finishes.

RACE RESULTS - 2012:

2012 Victoria High Point Series - Race 1 - January 21st.
We were originally scheduled to race at the Park at River Walk, but the wind was in excess of 20 mph plus gusts to ???. Chris Staiger offered the Grand Island Swimming Pool. The pool was large and the sailing, although very squirrly, was great.  Judy took some photos, which are posted below the table.

2012 Victoria Class High Point Series - Race Day 2 - March 24
Today, the wind was light and variable with some dead spots and some gusts.  Only four Victorias showed up ( too bad), and to make it worse, Dick Mccoy had wiring problems in his boat and could not compete.  It was pretty much "follow the leader" with Richard French winning all 12 heats.

2012 Victoria Class High Point Series - Race Day 3 - May 5th
Sailed at our regular venue, in front of Richard's home at Riverlakes. Five Victorias showed up. Richard French dominated (again) by winning 10 of the 12 heats. Stan Ogden won 1 and Rob Berg won the other. Looks like our "B" Fleet will be discontinued next year due to the low turnout.

2012 Victoria Class High Point Series - Race Day 4 (Final) - June 23rd.
We had a good turnout today with seven (7) Victorias racing.  Riverlakes venue with a decent wind of about 5 mph, although spooky and changeable... frequently. This was a practice for our upcoming Mad Duck Regatta at Monterey on June 30th and July 1st.  Congratulations to Richard French for winning the Victoria High Point Series for 2012.

A practice Start                                                               After the Start

2012 Victoria Mad Duck Regatta - Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club - June 30th & July 1st.

This report written by Thomas Hoover of MPYC....

Friday night started off with dinner and a couple of practice races at the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club. While scores were recorded on Friday night, I promised to NOT publish those results. I will mention that we had the unique experience of watching one of the starting line marks be pulled under water and molested by a crab. More than a few sailors went home that night to work feverishly on tuning up their boats to deal with the stiff competition being offered by Bakersfield Model Yacht Club.

Kit Ruck and Sarah Duncan handled Race Committee duties with grace and skill. Kit also made the trophies, arranged for doughnuts in the morning and kept the official score sheet. Sarah kept the riff-raff at bay, called the courses, the finishes and handled course management. This regatta would not have been possible with out these two outstanding ladies. Mike Gross was our on-site US Sailing Judge, ready to deal with any protests, provided explanations for the finer points of the RRS and did the scoring entries into the computer. Either we had an exceptionally well behaved group of sailors or Mike was so intimidating that folks took their penalty turns rather than risk a protest. Mike also donated the food and demonstrated his culinary skills by grilling lunch on Sunday. He insisted that all contributions toward lunch go to the Monterey Peninsulat Youth Sailing Foundation for a very generous donation of $100.

Saturday morning started with a light fog that cleared well before the Skippers Meeting. By 10:00, the sun was out, temperatures were in the high 60's and we had a 10+ knot breeze from the North West. After a slight delay in starting (yummy doughnuts Kit!), seven races were completed before the 12:00 lunch break. A quick look at the standings showed Chris Staiger (BMYC) establishing a dominating lead with 7 1st place finishes. The race was much closer in the rest of the fleet. Dick Clark (MPYC) was tied with Dick McCoy (BMYC) for second at 33 points a piece. Stan Ogden (BMYC) was only 8 points behind them with 41 points followed closely by Dave Ogden (BMYC) at 42 points, Brian Hoover (MPYC) at 43 points and Dave Morris (MPYC) at 45 points. It is worth noting at this point that Brian and Dave were both sailing Silver (stock sails and spars) Fleet boats and they had 4 Gold (class legal sails and spars) Fleet boats behind them. The final standings score sheet identifies Gold and Silver fleet boats.

Saturday's lunch was pizza with a variety of beverages was provided at the lake by Steve Kraft and his lovely wife Lynn. This spontaneous action on Steve and Lynn's part was much welcomed by all the sailors and set the tone for the regatta. As pizza was enjoyed and the occasional barley based beverage was consumed, ideas were exchanged about faster tuning and better tactics.

Saturday afternoon the wind increased and became steadier but we still had the occasional random hole between the increasingly frequent gusts. At 1:00pm Race Committee called the fleet back to the starting line. After 8 more races, Chris continued to dominate with 8 more First place scores. At this point he could retire from the regatta and still win. Happily he is the perfect competitor and stayed both to give the rest of us someone to chase and to offer friendly and helpful advice about how to go faster. The rest of the fleet continued to sail a close fought race. Dick Clark hung on tight to his second place standing (74 points) but Dick McCoy (106 points) was edged down the leader board with fierce competition from Brian Hoover (88 points), Steve Kraft (89 points) and Stan Ogden (92 points). At the end of the day, the top six spots in the field of 16 were split evenly between BMYC at 1st, 5th and 6th versus MPYC at 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The presence of a Silver Fleet boat in 3rd place was cause for ribbing of some of the trailing Gold Fleet sailors.

As Saturday ended and folks started collecting boats and gear, one sailor demonstrated the folly of not reading the sailing instructions. Apparently this individual thought this was the Mad Dunk regatta and decided to test the water at Lake El Estero. This is defnitely not recommended. The newly odiferous individual was sent to his hotel room for a scrubbing before he joined the rest of the fleet at the yacht club for dinner. Saturday night dinner at the club was full of discussions about tactics, tuning and tracking to wind but eventually that was set aside for a pleasant evening with the MPYC Yacht Club Band. Some folks called it an early evening, either to rest up for the next day or work madly on their boat (me) while those with a better grasp on the important things in life stayed until the band was done and the bar closed down.

Sunday morning started with a nice westerly breeze and jokes about mark eating crabs. The missing mark was recovered from where the crab had left it, apparently no worse for the wear. After a delicious morning coffee and doughnut break, followed by a round of Bloody Marys, Race Committee cracked the whip and dragged the fleet out on to the water.

It might not surprise anyone to hear that, once again, Chris dominated the morning races. It is worth noting that he was not _always_ in front but he did somehow manage to be in front at the finish line. I have been told this is all that counts. The standings in the rest of the fleet continued to shuffle. Brian Hoover (116 points) managed to squeeze past Dick Clark (121 points) for second place on the leader board. Dick McCoy (140 points) managed to work his way into 4th, ahead of Stan Ogden (150 points)in 5th place. Recovering from Saturday afternoon, Dave Morris of MPYC (155 pts) edged back ahead of Steve Kraft (156.5 pts) for sixth place. As we broke for lunch, the top six spots were still split between MPYC (2nd, 3rd and 6th) and BMYC (1st, 4th and 5th) with the lead shifting toward BMYC.

After the delightful meal provided by Mike Gross, Race Committee called the fleet back to the line and commenced the last set of the regatta. The competition was getting fierce, the wind was picking up and the boat traffic in the harbor was increasing. Equipment failures started to reduce the numbers of the fleet as they returned to the water,. Dave Ogden (BMYC) had retired from the race Sunday morning with a failed rudder servo and now Judy Madsen (BMYC) was forced to retire when her receiver was flooded. Midway through the afternoon Casey Ogden (BMYC) would also be forced to retire with a parted forestay. The last few races of the day would only have 12 or 13 boats on the line instead of the 16 we started with on Saturday.

If you are expecting to hear the Chris again lead the fleet around the buoys you are in for a surprise. In race 24, Casey Ogden (BMYC) led him to the finish line while in race 29, Stan Ogden was given that pleasure. More surprising was race 27 when Chris followed Jacob Paoletti, Brian Hoover, Thomas Hoover, Donald Hoover, Dave Morris and Matt Szeidenzahl, all of MPYC, to the finish line. It is worth noting that by this time the MPYC bartender was on duty so Chris may have been distracted.

The Sunday afternoon race set was best characterized by wind gusts that had boats out of control, wind chop putting a lot of water inside the boats and the occasional boat wake providing for some down wind surfing. With Race Committee adding some challenging courses that had the front of the fleet crossing the back of the fleet, the regatta came to an end at 3:00 after succesful 30 races. As the sailors settled down to the bar, Race Committee, our Sailing Judge and the Race Director held a hurried conference. In the scoreing of nearly 500 finishes, in two separate races a boat had managed to sneak across the line with out being recorded. Examination of the standings and results showed that one of those instances would have no effect on the standing for anyone. The other instance would affect bragging rights at the bar for the middle of the fleet. The unscored boat was given redress for the missing race equal to the average of all of his other races, moving him. With these decisions made, it was time to move to the bar to announce the results:

Dave Ogden is the winner of the "Mad Dunk" award, which consisted of a bottle of Sailor Jerry rum. This award was added by Race Committee to recognize the challenges sailors have in reading Sailing Instructions.

Steve Kraft is the winner of the "Quack Up" award to recognize the drive to not give up. Steve was the highest scoring sailor to complete every race.

Dick Clark of MPYC, sailing a Gold Fleet boat, is the winner of the Third Place trophy. Brian Hoover of MPYC, sailing a Silver Fleet boat, is the winner of the Second Place trophy. Chris Staiger of BMYC, sailing a Gold Fleet boat, is the winner of the First Place trophy.

Comments by Stan Ogden...

Out of 30 heats, Chris Straiger won 27, Stan Ogden won 1, Jabob Paoletti won 1 and Casey Ogden won 1.   As in any sailing races, consistency is the key.  Getting to the first mark in first place is, of course, of primary inportance to winning, but maintaining a sound boat without accidents or mishaps is also critical.  All of the BMYC skippers, except for Chris, had some problems with consistency (DNF or DNS) caused by accidents or failure of their boat in some way.  This indicates we should perhaps concentrate on keeping clear of other boats during the race and preping our boats more thoroughly before racing.

It was a great sailing regatta in both the fresh water pond of Lake Estero as well as the salt water ocean off of the MPYC docks.  Everyone had a great time...and I'm sure will do it again next year.

Here are a few photos from the event:

2012 Victoria Class Club Championship Regatta - July 14th

Comments by Chris Staiger...
We had a little bit of every type of weather at the 2012 BMYC Victoria Club Championship Regatta on Saturday July 14th. Conditions varied from some absolute drifters in some of the earlier heats, to 'rig-breaking' winds later on. If you didn't like the current conditions, all you had to do was wait a few minutes...

There were 15 races sailed, with 2 throw-outs. Point totals are below:
