Soling 50 Fleet

The Soling 50 Class model yacht is a radio-controlled model of the full-sized Olympic Class Soling, which is a 27 foot, 3 man, keel boat designed by Jan Herman Lingle of Oslo, Norway in 1964. The Soling 50 R/C one-design model yacht is 50” long and weighs a minimum of 17 pounds. Hulls and decks are available in both fiberglass and ABS plastic. With a removable keel and a detachable sail-rig, the Soling 50 is easily transported.

The Soling 50 Class offers close and competitive sailing in moderate and stiff winds. It acts and feels closer to a full-sized boat than most other R/C model yachts. They are currently being sailed all over the U.S., especially in California, where over 100 boats are currently registered.

The BMYC Soling 50 Fleet travels to San Diego and San Rafael to compete in regional regattas. Every third year or so, the AMYA-sanctioned Soling 50 National Championship Regatta is held in Bakersfield, where skippers from all over the country compete for trophies and glory.

This medium-sized yacht's hull must be initially purchased from any one of three Class-certified manufacturers of the Soling 50. Decks and sails are strictly controlled, but may be purchased or made from scratch. Almost all other equipment is up to the owner. BMYC has a Soling 50 Construction Guide available to those interested in building their own fiberglass model yacht. In addition, many BMYC members are always available to offer their experienced help and assistance.

For complete details on past models of the Soling 50 Class from it's beginnings in 1972 up through current manuals, see HOME page, under the "Tech Corner".

As of 2015, there are three (3) Class-Approved Manufacturers for Soling 50s:

• Hartman Model Boats, Bergen, NY     (Listed under "Hartman Models")
• GRP Model Yachts, Freedom, CA
• Ludwig Mfg, Universal City, TX.   (Contact Larry Ludwig)
