GETTING STARTED

Since 1994 radio-controlled (R/C) model sailboats have been sailed and raced locally in Bakersfield. Our club is one of over 200 from all across the U.S that is sanctioned by the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). We sponsor local, regional and national regattas, which are attended by local skippers as well as skippers from other areas. Our local members also just sail ‘for-the-fun-of-it’ as often as possible and as personal time permits.

We currently sail three classes of one-design boats on a regular basis, the Victoria, the Fairwind and the Soling 50. By “class” is meant that every boat meets the same measurement specifications as the other boats in the class so as to ensure equal performance and racing competition. It is our hope that you will join us in the hobby and sport of R/C sailing and that you will eventually own a boat of one of the classes we race. Check out the individual classes of model yachts that we sail on this website.

Our club meets to sail, season and weather permitting, twice a month, usually Saturday afternoons at Riverlakes in northwest Bakersfield or the Park at River Walk in the southeast. We try to schedule in about 12 races and finish up for the day by 5 PM. The rules, the layout of the course marks and the procedure we use when racing are identical to those used by sailors of full-sized sailboats.

COME SAIL WITH US!

For some, the interest in model sailing starts in childhood with the simple pleasure of seeing a model make its way under power of the wind. Others have a full-size sailing and racing background and find that model yachting requires the same skills and competitive tactics. Still others start as craftsmen drawn to the creation of a fine yacht replica. All are welcome.

By joining our local BMYC and the national AMYA, you can easily obtain information on every aspect of model sailing. Whether your interests are in designing, building, racing, or just sailing, there are members who share your enthusiasm.
